Is GMO-soy contributing to food allergies?
You may have heard a lot of scary things about soy these days. But be careful to note that the dangers spoken of are from genetically modified (GMO) soy and for good reason.
As was noted in this recent article on AllergyKids…
“In 1996, soy was engineered to contain new proteins, chemicals and toxins so that soy crops could withstand the spraying of industrial pesticides. 90% of soy is now engineered with these new proteins and chemicals, which created new allergens . These new allergens are similar in their amino acid structure to known shellfish and peanut allergens.” (AllergyKids) This is believed to have increased the rates of the now common peanut allergy in children.
The article also notes that “soy is also used in many processed foods, as soy lecithin, soy lectin, soybean oil and other soy derivatives by the United States food industry, despite being banned in foods around the world (in Europe, lupine is used in place of soy, given that 90% of soy now contains these new chemicals).” (AllergyKids)
There seem to be a host of other possible dangers to this modified soy. It always shocks me when science reveals dangers that other countries protect their citizens from, but in America, politics and the food industry are quite strange bedfellows.
And part of the sad story is that if we are to stay away from soy altogether we miss some amazing health benefits of this little bean. Luckily, we have several soy protein shake options from non-GMO soy, free from alteration or chemicals, from a company with unwaivering commitment to quality, purity and performance.
My kids love the meal shake (aka: their daily chocolate milk). My husband doesn’t leave the house without his energizing soy protein. And thanks to the yummy inch losing shakes I am free from my morning coffee addiction, blood sugar crashes and now have energy for my entire day!
