Children’s Asthma
Hey, let’s talk children’s health! I’m feeling particularly blessed by my children today, so I’d like to share some information about a health subject near to our family, asthma.
Since my husband has suffered from allergies and asthma his entire life and I have fought seasonal allergies as well, we shouldn’t have been suprised to find our son was plagued with allergies and asthma also. But we were! Not that he had them, but of the timing. Since birth he was covered with eczema and he was struggling to breathe at 18months. He’s just a baby, I thought! But we’ve learned that such early onset is more and more common.
Did you know…
- 1 in 13 school age children has asthma in America
- asthma rates in kids under 5 increased by 160% from 1980-1994
- asthma is the number 1 cause of non-accident related ER visits in children
The Action Plan…
- talk to your doctor
- create a clean home - a 2004 New England Journal of Medicine study found that creating a clean home environment was just as effective as using inhaled steroid medicines
- this means using good air purification, dustmite covers, non-toxic cleaners, effectively cleaning floors every week
- and of course stay clear of smoke and noxious fumes
Our Lessons Learned…The key to wellness for our son has been testing to know his triggers, careful monitoring of his environment, a good nutrition program and medication when needed. Supplementing his diet with safe, natural vitamins, that are truly balanced and complete for his growing needs has really improved his health. He still uses medication occasionally but is greatly improved. And after finding safe, all natural cleansers and lotions his eczema isn’t much more than a memory.
