The Big O

That’s right, Organic.  Whether you are particularly health conscious or not you can not mistake the fact that organic food choices are popping up everywhere.  Once only destined for those of us who live in urban areas and shop at fully organic markets, now organic products of all types are available at your local grocery stores everywhere.  And for good reason; they are in demand!

Consumers are learning more about the importance of chemical, steroid and hormone-free foods.  And in case you’re not one of them…let’s chat.

Does organic really make a difference?  Study upon study has shown that organic products have higher nutrient levels and most importantly are safer.  Our bodies are under attack every day from chemicals in the air we breathe, the water we drink, from absorbtion through the skin and in most concentrated forms…from the foods we eat.  Take a look at the Body Burden study, summerized by Dr. Greene

This study features the largest number of chemicals ever tested for in the same group of people – 210 chemicals were tested. The results were staggering – each participant tested positive for an average of 53 known human carcinogens, 55 chemicals known to cause birth defects or developmental delays, and a host of other chemicals. Each participant tested positive for chemicals that damage the brain or nervous system, that weaken the immune system, and chemicals that cause reproductive abnormalities. Perhaps most disturbing: these 210 chemicals tested represent only a small fraction of people’s exposure. More than 500 chemicals are used in the U.S. as active ingredients in pesticides alone. More than 3,200 chemicals are regularly added to foods. More than 2000 new chemicals are registered for use in the U.S. each year – most with no safety testing.

Having a son with eczema, a recent study from London caught my eye as well.  It concluded that when given to young children “consumption of organic dairy products was associated with lower eczema risk” (Br J Nutr. 2007 Aug 29;:1-8).  Studies showing a decreased risk of disease in correlation with organic food consumption are showing up all the time, especially in relation to children.  Pound for pound children receive a much higher concentration of chemicals and hormones from non-organic foods.

There are so many reasons to go organic and evidence is accumulating daily, unfortunately at the expense of our health.  There are a number of great sources of information on the web.  I find Dr. Greene’s site particularly useful.  I encourage you to take a look and take his Organic Rx challenge.

And don’t forget the importance of chemical, preservative, toxin-free supplements, pain relievers and herbal remedies.  You can always count on pure, natural nutrition in our vitamins, herbs and supplements
