Toxic from within
What’s for breakfast at your house? How about scrambled eggs, milk, and Bisphenol A? Bisphenol A (BPA) may be on your menu without your knowing it. BPA is one of three potentially dangerous chemical compounds discussed in the
A Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) study found BPA in 92% of Americans who were studied. Its safety is still being debated, but biologists point to serious reproductive problems found in mice. BPA, a plastic hardener, can be found in some baby bottles, sippy cups, take out food containers, aluminum and tin cans. BPA and two other types of compounds have been studied by the CDC and environmental groups where they found disturbing results.
Brominated flame retardants (PBDEs) and plastic softeners called phthalates as well as BPA are more prevalent than we might imagine. One study found infants’ cord blood contained approximately 200 chemicals, including carcinogens and neurotoxins. You might say that we are living in a toxic world, but these studies show that these toxins are now on the inside of us, not just around us.
According to chemist Eva Montgomery, “It’s nearly impossible to avoid all of the chemicals mentioned in the article; they are cheap and widely used.” “But, besides higher prices, many alternatives do not work as well as the currently used chemicals ….and some would not meet the fire safety standards,” said Montgomery.
We can minimize our exposure to toxins by taking a few simple steps:
1. Don’t reheat food in the microwave in plastic containers. Use paper towels rather than plastic wrap to prevent splattering as additives can potentially leach out from plastic wrap.
2. Replace your vinyl shower curtain with a cloth one.
3. Avoid using plastics, including water bottles, with a number 1 on the bottom. Even at room temperature, these plastics leach chemicals into the water. Switch to reusable water bottles with the number 2 or higher. 4. Minimize the amount of plastic products; use natural products when possible. 5. Use only nontoxic cleaners and laundry products such as our green clean line.
6. Use only nontoxic personal care products (shampoo, soap, toothpaste, deodorant) such as our salon quality hair care and personal care products.
7. Drink plenty of fresh, purified water and use all natural supplements to keep your immune system functioning at its highest level.
8. Purify the air in your home to remove as many toxins as possible. Use a filterless air purifier that does not trap and hold the toxins in.
